Vem är Don Corleone baserad på?
Filmen är den första i en serie av tre filmer av Coppola om den fiktiva italiensk-amerikanska maffiafamiljen Corleone, baserade på Mario Puzos bok Gudfadern. Mario Puzo skrev även manuset till filmerna tillsammans med Coppola. Handlingen i denna första film utspelar sig mellan 1945 och 1955.
