Vad kallas för tidigt födda barn?
Prematur är ett barn som är fött före graviditetsvecka 37 (36+6). Ordet prematur betyder ”före mognaden”. Denna definition har ifrågasatts eftersom för tidigt födda barn egentligen inte är omogna i förhållande till sin gestationsålder. En bättre term för att beskriva för tidig födsel är underburen.

De flesta barn föds efter 39 eller 40 fullgångna graviditetsveckor. Drygt 5 procent av barnen föds för tidigt (prematura), före 37 fullgångna graviditetsveckor. Av dem är det drygt 900 barn som föds före graviditetsvecka 32.
