What is the role of VQ scan in pulmonary embolism (PE)?
V/Q scanning of the lungs is an important modality for establishing the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. V/Q scanning may be used when CT scanning is not available or if the patient has a contraindication to CT scanning or intravenous contrast material.
What is a a V/Q scan used for?
A V/Q scan uses a small amount of a radioactive substance called a tracer that helps look for disease in the body. The scans help diagnose different lung conditions, including a pulmonary embolism (PE).
What are the limitations of a VQ scan for PE?
The main criticism of the VQ scan is the high percentage (60-70%) of indeterminate results (low probability or intermediate probability). Unless the V/Q scan is low probability and the clinical suspicion is low, the diagnosis of PE cannot be excluded or made based on a nondiagnostic study.
What is the difference between a VQ scan and CT scan?
VQ Scan. VQ scan is still the recommended initial imaging test for the workup of PE (pulmonary embolism) although many institutions have replaced VQ with CT because of uncertainty with how to manage nondiagnostic VQ scans. CT is an ideal initial test in those patients with high clinical suspicion in whom you may choose to perform CT first…
