Though many of the verses in it are almost exact mantras from various Upanishads, prior to Sankara (8th Century A. D), Bhagavad-Gita was not perhaps as popular a scriptural text for teaching Vedanta as it is today.
What is the difference between Advaita and Dvaita?
Advaita propounds that the world is an illusion. All actions and emotions including sorrow are just false impressions. Fundamentally, the soul and God are one; when the soul releases itself from this illusion; it merges with Brahmn, the Universal Consciousness. According to dvaita, the world is real.
