Hur behandlar man toxoplasma?
Läkemedel för att behandla infektionen finns, men en okomplicerad toxoplasmos hos en person med normalt immunsystem behandlas i regel inte. Behandling ges däremot till gravida kvinnor med en akut toxoplasmos liksom till det nyfödda barnet.
Kan man bli av med toxoplasma?
Parasiten dör om köttet hettas upp till minst 65 grader. Parasiten dör också om du genomfryser köttet. Tvätta händerna efter kontakt med jord och sand. Tvätta köksknivarna efter kontakt med kött.
Hur vanligt är toxoplasma gravid?
Det är ovanligt att kvinnor infekteras av toxoplasma under graviditeten. Men om en gravid kvinna, som inte är immun mot toxoplasma, infekteras kan parasiten spridas till fostret. Det kan i sällsynta fall orsaka medfödd infektion, fosterskada och i värsta fall missfall.

Toxoplasma gondii dör vid upphettning till minst 60 – 65 ºC eller djupfrysning i -18 ºC i minst tre dygn.
Hur smittas katter av toxoplasma?
I naturen smittas katter ofta som unga sedan de ätit smågnagare eller fåglar som bär på parasitecystor i sina vävnader. Katter kan också smittas av andra katters avföring eller rått kött serverat av ägaren. Till följd av den könliga fortplantningen i kattens tarmsystem utsöndras så kallad oocystor i avföringen.

En gravid kvinna som nysmittas kan smitta sitt foster. Annars smittar inte sjukdomen mellan människor. Antal seropositiva i vuxna normalbefolkningen i Sverige är ca 15-25 % (de högre talen i södra Sverige). Toxoplasmos är inte anmälningspliktig.
