I Kina och Japan kan text läsas och skrivas lodrät i båda riktningar och även vågrät i båda riktningar, även om det vanliga är uppifrån och ner eller höger till vänster. Inte ens de antika egyptierna skrev och läste från vänster till höger, precis som arabiska läses hieroglyfer nämligen från höger till vänster.
