Näbbdjuret är ett av de få däggdjur som lägger ägg, vanligtvis 2 stycken. Äggen har mjukt skal. Näbbdjuret värmer äggen tills de kläcks efter upp till två veckor. Äggläggningen sker allmänt 27 dagar efter parningen.
