Atarax används vid klåda och nässelfeber. Atarax används även vid ångest och oro hos vuxna. Vid klåda och nässelfeber nås effekt efter ca 1 timme och kvarstår minst 24 timmar. Vid ångest och oro märks effekt efter ca 15 minuter och kvarstår i ca 12 timmar.

Can hydroxyzine be used to treat anxiety before surgery?
Has a calming effect and can cause drowsiness which means it may be used as a premedication before surgery or given following surgery. The calming effect of hydroxyzine may be useful for some people with anxiety who have not responded to other treatments, such as benzodiazepines.
Are tiredness and sleepiness analogous side effects of hydroxyzine?
Since tiredness typically goes hand-in-hand with sleepiness, they may be considered analogous side effects. However, not everyone who necessarily feels tired automatically feels sleepy. Therefore, it may be best to list tiredness and sleepiness as separately occurring reactions to ingestion of hydroxyzine.
How long can you take hydroxyzine for anxiety?
If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Hydroxyzine is for short-term use only. You should not take this medicine for longer than 4 months. Call your doctor if your anxiety symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse.
