Vad är epidural abscess?
Avgränsade ansamlingar av varig materia i ryggradens eller skallens epiduralrum. De allra flesta epiduralabscesser förekommer i ryggradskanalen och är förknippade med osteomyelit i någon kota, epiduralanalgesi eller andra tillstånd.
Vad beror Benröta på?
Oftast är orsaken stafylokocker, men streptokocker och andra bakterier kan också orsaka skelettinfektion. Bakterierna kan sprida sig till skelettet från närliggande vävnad eller via blodet från en infektion i en annan del av kroppen, till exempel om du har en lunginflammation eller en urinvägsinfektion.
Vad är Psoas abscess?
Psoasabscess, även kallad iliopsoasabscess, är ett ovanligt tillstånd som sällan misstänks i initialskedet. Patienten presenterar sig i det typiska fallet med en triad av symtom: feber, smärta i rygg, flank eller buk och flexionskontraktur i höftleden. Vid misstanke om tillståndet bör datortomografi utföras.
What is a spinal epidural abscess?
A spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is inflammation with pus within the epidural space. The clinical presentation is insidious, and diagnosis is difficult in the early stages.
How is an epidural abscess diagnosed?
Imaging is best performed with MRI and emergency surgery is often required. Spinal epidural abscess is an uncommon condition with an estimated incidence of 2-3 per 10,000 hospital admissions.
What is the role of plain films in the workup of epidural abscess?
Plain films have little role to play in investigating a patient with suspected spinal epidural abscess, as no direct visualization of the collection is possible. They can, however, be useful in visualizing established discitis-osteomyelitis, particularly when MRI (and to a lesser extent CT) are not available.
What causes pus in the epidural space?
Rare condition characterized by inflammation with pus within the epidural space. Recognized risk factors include diabetes mellitus, intravenous drug abuse, history of recent spinal surgery or trauma, indwelling spinal catheter, concomitant local infection, and immunosuppression.
