Varför får man diabetes insipidus?
Diabetes insipidus (DI) orsakas oftast av brist på ADH från hypofysen och kallas då neurogen eller central DI. Mindre vanligt är nefrogen DI, orsakad av minskad receptorokänslighet för ADH i njurarna. Båda tillstånden orsakar polyuri och sekundärt till det ökad törst och polydipsi.
Vad betyder insipidus?
Ordet ”diabetes” är grekiska betyder riklig urinutsöndring. Med diabetes insipidus eller hypofysär diabetes avses riklig urinutsöndring som beror på brist på vasopressin som insöndras från hypofysens baklob eller vasopressinets otillräckliga effekt på njurarna (s.k. nefrogen diabetes insipidus).

How much urine does a diabetic insipidus make a day?
While most people make 1 to 3 quarts of urine a day, people with diabetes insipidus can make up to 20 quarts of urine a day. People with this disorder need to urinate frequently, called polyuria. They may also feel thirsty all the time and drink lots of liquids, a condition called polydipsia. Are diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus the same?
