Why are there so many yellows in Yellowstone?
The yellows are the result of iron and sulfur in the rock. In the northern part of the park, outside of the Yellowstone Caldera, are travertine terraces built by hot springs. These large, gentle hydrothermal features are collectively called the Mammoth Hot Springs. Travertine terraces build here because of the underlying limestone.
When does Yellowstone open for the year?
