Den härstammar från 1500-talets Skottland och det finns än idag existerande klubbar, som bildades på 1700-talet. Till Sverige kom curlingen 1846 och Svenska Curlingförbundet bildades 1916. Curling spelas idag i ett 60-tal länder och är som störst i Kanada med omkring en miljon aktiva spelare.
