What does a high ALT to AST ratio mean?
An AST/ALT ratio of less than one (where the ALT is significantly higher than the AST) is suggestive of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. An AST/ALT ratio equal to one (where the ALT is equal to the AST) is suggestive of acute viral hepatitis or drug-related liver toxicity. An AST/ALT ratio higher than one (where the AST is higher than ALT)
What does it mean when AST is above normal?
When a blood test for AST indicates elevation above normal range, the indication is that damage may be present to one of the organs where AST is normally found. Elevated AST can be an indicator of liver disease, heart and cardiovascular disease, damage to the skeletal muscles, severe burns, severe loss of blood,…
What is the relationship between liver disease and AST and Alt?
AST/ALT Ratio. If the liver sustains an acute injury, you can expect to see a sudden spike in the ALT. On the other hand, if a liver disease is slowly progressing, the damage incurred by the liver will gradually affect other organs as well. As these organs are damaged, the AST will begin to rise.
