Vad innebär en cellinje?
Med begreppet cellinje förstår man en cellpopulation som delar sig konstant och vars livstid är oändlig. Cellinjer fås från cancervävnad eller primärcellodlingar, som behandlats med t. ex. kemiska mutagener, strålning eller virus.
Varifrån kommer HeLa celler?
HeLa-celler är celler som isolerats från en livmoderhalscancer och som används över hela världen vid cellbiologisk, virologisk, molekylärbiologisk inte minst medicinsk forskning. De var de första mänskliga celler från vilka en permanent odödlig cellinje skapats och som förökar sig obegränsat i en cellodling.

Subkultivering. När cellerna växer och blir fler behöver man dela upp cellerna i flera kulturer så att de får utrymme att fortsätta växa. För att detta ska kunna ske måste man få loss cellerna från odlingsflaskan. Man säger då att man subkultiverar cellkulturen.

Henrietta Lacks. Lacks was the unwitting source of these cells from a tumor biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., in 1951. These cells were then cultured by George Otto Gey who created the cell line known as HeLa, which is still used for medical research.
