Vad menas med könsstympning?
Könsstympning av flickor och kvinnor görs för att kontrollera flickors och kvinnors kroppar och sexualitet och har bland annat att göra med föreställningen om att mäns och familjers heder är kopplad till kvinnors och flickors sexuella beteende.
Vilka följder får kvinnlig könsstympning?
Alla typer av könsstympning kan orsaka fysiska, sexuella, psykiska och sociala besvär.

Vad är skillnaden mellan omskärelse och könsstympning?
Borttagande av förhud på könsorganet kan bidra till minskad risk för infektioner och ökad sexuell njutning. Medan däremot den kvinnliga könsstympningen leder till ökad infektionsrisk, problem med att ha samlag och svårigheter att utföra dagliga toalettbehov[3].

The practice is almost universal in Somalia, Guinea and Djibouti, with levels around 90 per cent, while it affects only 1 per cent of girls and women in Cameroon and Uganda. However, FGM is a human rights issue that affects girls and women worldwide.
Where is FGM legal in the world?
A March 2020 report by End FGM European Network, U.S. End FGM/C Network and Equality Now found that FGM was practiced in at least 92 countries across all continents, while 51 of them had a law that specifically criminalised FGM. : 11 FGM was illegal in 22 of the 28 most FGM-prevalent countries in Africa in September 2018.
Who supports FGM/cutting?
Women Support And World View. In most countries where FGM/Cutting is common, the majority of women and girls think that the practice should be encouraged. In Benin and Ghana, 93% of the women and girls are in support of FGM/C. Also, in Kenya, Iraq, Niger, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania, over 85% of women and girls support the practice.
What is FGM and why is it a problem?
FGM was meant to ensure virginity before marriage and fidelity after marriage. It was also supposed to initiate a girl into womanhood and increase male sexual pleasure. Currently, Africa has the highest number of FGM cases while the practice is more concentrated in 29 countries.
