Folvidon ges för att bota eller förebygga folsyrabrist. Folsyrabrist kan exempelvis uppkomma vid behandling med vissa läkemedel och vid vissa tarmsjukdomar eller andra tillstånd då man inte kan tillgodogöra sig folsyra i kosten.
